Matthew Johnson and Matthew Gardner (center), researchers in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University, and their adviser, Dr. Hamid Toliyat (left), received the Second Prize Paper Award during the prestigious 2016 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Energy Conversion Congress & Exposition (ECCE) in Milwaukee.
They received the award from the chair of the Electric Machines Committee of IEEE’s Industry Applications Society, Dr. Andrew Knight (right), for their paper, “Analysis and Development of an Axial Flux Magnetically Geared Generator.”
The paper describes their development, analysis and experimental evaluation of a novel topology for compactly integrating an axial flux motor or generator with an axial flux magnetic gear to produce an extremely high torque density machine. Their laboratory at Texas A&M, the Advanced Electrical Machines and Power Electronics Laboratory, is a world leader in the emerging field of magnetic gears.
Johnson earned his Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Texas A&M in 2011. He is currently finishing his Ph.D. in electrical engineering while working in the Advanced Electric Machines and Power Electronics Laboratory. His research interests include magnetic gears, magnetically geared machines and motor drives.
Gardner earned his Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering with a minor in computer science from Baylor University in 2014. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in electrical engineering while working in the Advanced Electric Machines and Power Electronics Laboratory. His research interests include optimal design and control of magnetic gears and magnetically geared machines.
Toliyat came to Texas A&M in 1994 after being an assistant professor at Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1991. He is an IEEE Fellow and received the prestigious IEEE Nikola Tesla Award in 2014, the Cyrill Veinott Award in Electromechanical Energy Conversion from the IEEE Power Engineering Society in 2004, the Patent and Innovation Award from The Texas A&M University System Office of Technology Commercialization in 2007 the TEES Fellow Award in 2004 and 2006, an Outstanding Professor Award in 2005 from Texas A&M, the Distinguished Teaching Award in 2003, the E.D. Brockett Professorship Award in 2002, the Eugene Webb Faculty Fellow Award in 2000 and the Texas A&M Select Young Investigator Award in 1999 from Texas A&M. He has also received the Space Act Award from NASA in 1999 and the Schlumberger Foundation Technical Awards in 2001 and 2000. Toliyat has been an editor of IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion and an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics. He has been chair of IEEE-IAS Industrial Power Conversion Systems Department and is a member of Sigma Xi and was general chair of the 2005 IEEE International Electric Machines and Drives Conference in San Antonio. Toliyat is a professional engineer in the State of Texas.
