Sirajum Munira, a master’s student in transportation engineering in the Zachry Department of Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University, and AKM Abir, a recent graduate of the department, were selected as finalists in the Transportation Research Board (TRB) 2017 Transportation Analytics Contest.
A group of TRB committees focusing on travel-demand forecasting organized the contest in collaboration with AirSage to analyze multi-day travel-demand in the form of origin-destination matrices gleaned from cell phone wireless signaling data. Of 16 entries from around the world, Munira and Abir were chosen as one of five teams to present their work at the TRB 2017 annual meeting.
Under the advisement of Dr. Xiubin Wang, associate professor in the civil engineering department, Munira and Abir developed an interactive web application that can utilize cellular location data in order to determine geographic extent and temporal variation of vehicular traffic in a given area.
The interactive data visualization tool provided graphical representation of the travel characteristics within the study area using quantitative maps and graphs.
The team presented its work to the ADB40(1) Emerging Methods Subcommittee in Washington D.C. on Jan. 10.
