Dr. Sonia J. Garcia, senior director for Access and Inclusion in Engineering Academic and Student Affairs (EASA) at Texas A&M University, has been recognized as the 2017 recipient of the Dr. Robert M. Gates Inspiration Award at the Regents’ Scholars Spring Banquet by the Scholarships & Financial Aid office.
Garcia was nominated for the award by her engineering regents’ students, who spoke highly of her support and dedication. She has been involved with the Regents’ Scholars Program since its inception in 2004, and served on the Regents’ Scholars’ Coordination Committee, which established the program as it is today.
“I am incredibly honored to have received this award, especially because it came from the nomination of engineering regents’ students,” said Garcia.
The Dr. Robert M. Gates Inspiration Award was established in 2007 to honor Gates' legacy and tenure at Texas A&M. Gates, who served as president of the university from 2002 to 2006, routinely challenged the faculty and staff to provide support for Regents' Scholars through mentoring and advising.
