Dr. Balakrishna Haridas and Dr. Kristen Maitland from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Texas A&M University have been elected to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) College of Fellows.
AIMBE is the authoritative voice and advocate for the value of medical and biological engineering to society. Its mission is to recognize excellence, advance the public understanding, and accelerate medical and biological innovation.
College membership honors those who have made contributions to engineering and medicine research, practice or education, and to the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of medical and biological engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to bioengineering education.
Haridas, professor of practice and director of the BioInnovation Program, and executive director of the TEES Division of Commercialization & Entrepreneurship was elected for major contributions in development of technologies for minimally invasive surgery, endovascular interventions and biomaterials for tissue repair and healing.
“It is a pleasure and honor for me to be inducted as a Fellow of AIMBE, an institution that I have admired for its contributions toward promoting the field of medical and biological engineering to the public, industry and health care policy makers in government,” Haridas said.
Maitland, associate professor and director of the Microscopy and Imaging Center, was elected for contributions to advanced optical imaging instrumentation and its application to detection of cancer, inflammation and infection.
“I am truly honored to be elected to the AIMBE College of Fellows, a notable group of leaders in medical and biological engineering committed to improving health and society,” Maitland said.
The AIMBE College of Fellows Class of 2019 included 156 members. While most Fellows are from the United States, the College of Fellows has inducted Fellows representing 30 countries. Current members include Nobel Prize laureates, Presidential Medal of Science and/or Technology and Innovation recipients, and members of the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences.
