Dr. Gerard L. Coté has been selected as the winner of the 2024 Chancellor’s Innovation Award. This award recognizes one employee from an institution within The Texas A&M University System who has made a remarkable achievement through their discovery and invention.
Coté, the James J. Cain Professor I in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, is recognized as a worldwide expert in biomedical diagnostic and monitoring research. His research includes the creation of hand-held and wearable devices for chronic disease applications, infectious diseases and other biosensing applications.
In 2019, Coté was recognized as a Regents Professor for his dedication to The Texas A&M University System. He has also served as the director of the Center for Remote Health Technologies and Systems since 2014.
Coté contributes not only to fundamental research but also to translational research and the innovation ecosystem as the co-holder of several U.S. patents and as a co-founder of three medical device companies, BioTex, BasePair BioTechnologies, and Visualase (acquired by Medtronic in 2014).
In 2017, Coté received a grant (renewed in 2022) that totaled over $37M million for the Precise Advanced Technologies and Health Systems for Underserved Populations Engineering Research Center to change the paradigm for the health of underserved populations by developing revolutionary and cost-effective technologies and systems at the point of care.
“It is a huge honor to receive this award and be recognized by the university. This recognition highlights the importance of research to make healthcare more accessible,” said Coté.
Coté’s research is multidisciplinary and involves several investigators from across the world, including medical doctors, life science faculty, nurses, behavioral psychologists, faculty from other engineering and computer science disciplines, community stakeholders and industry personnel.
