With a passion for students to feel seen, heard and appreciated, Kathryn and Harold Armstrong established the Kathryn and Harold Armstrong ETID Emergency Fund in hopes of alleviating financial burdens for Aggie engineers.
The Power of The Spirit of Aggieland
Harold, a University of Texas at El Paso graduate, has been at the forefront of enhancing the PVF (pipes, valves, and fittings) industry in Texas. Born and raised in the Lone Star State, Harold is the founder, owner and president of Armstrong/Weatherly Associates, which has bridged the gap between manufacturers and buyers. Harold’s work in the sales and engineering industry since 1979 earned him a spot in the PVF Hall of Fame in 2020.
Working with PVF Roundtable, Harold was able to start giving back through their scholarship program. In his role, he looked at eligible schools and evaluated the impact a scholarship program would have on their students.
“My involvement with Texas A&M began through my role where I was leading scholarship efforts,” Harold said. “This position provided me with the opportunity to collaborate with several academic institutions, including Texas A&M.”
Through this collaboration, Harold’s interest in the Aggie Spirit was piqued. “I was particularly impressed by the university's commitment to student success and the nurturing culture it fosters,” Harold said.
As Harold learned more about Texas A&M and its impact on current students, one thing that stood out to him was the large presence of professors of practice. “Their extensive knowledge and real-world experience offer invaluable insights and significantly enhance the educational experience for students. This unique blend of academic rigor and practical expertise was a major factor that drew me to Texas A&M,” Harold said.
For Harold, the people, culture and robust traditions of Texas A&M are what make this school unique.
“There is a profound sense of community and loyalty that permeates the entire campus and extends far beyond it,” Harold said. “It’s important to respect this enthusiasm, as it is a core part of what makes the community so special.”
Investing in Futures
While Harold learned about different schools for the PVF Roundtable and the impact scholarships have on college students, he decided to make a difference himself; this is the foundation of the Kathryn and Harold Armstrong ETID Emergency Fund.
Providing a unique twist to this donation, the Department of Engineering Technology and Industrial Distribution will be allowed to distribute these funds to those who need it the most.
“This system ensures that the funds are directed to those who need them the most, making a tangible difference in their lives,” Harold said. He further mentions that professors and faculty are the ones who can identify which students need financial assistance, which is why they play a key role in this fund.
By establishing this gift, the Armstrongs hope to relieve the financial stress that comes with college so students can focus more time on their studies.
“By providing financial support and resources, I aim to help these students realize that if they are willing to work hard and strive to better their lives, there are dedicated individuals and programs ready to assist them along their journey,” Harold said.
The Armstrongs might not have graduated from Texas A&M, but they are eager to make an impact on the education of Aggies. The family hopes this fund will help students realize they can reach their full potential while overcoming the challenges they face.
