Dr. Anand J. Puppala has been recognized as a Distinguished Member by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the highest honor the society can confer. This prestigious accolade is reserved for ASCE Members or Fellows who have achieved eminence in a branch of civil engineering.

Puppala is recognized for his pioneering work in minimizing infrastructure damage on problematic soils and advancing resilience in flood control structures. His research encompasses pavement stability using recycled materials, the repair of embankment and levee slope failures, and infrastructure instrumentation and monitoring through uncrewed aerial vehicles and advanced asset management. Renowned for his commitment to innovation, he applies his findings to practical engineering design and construction, with significant contributions in geotechnics.

Puppala is a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Texas A&M University’s College of Engineering. He is also the director for the Center for Infrastructure Renewal where researchers develop advanced and sustainable materials and structural systems that will reduce costs and extend infrastructure life, safety, resiliency and durability.

Since 2015, Puppala has directed the National Science Foundation’s Industry-University Cooperative Research Center site as part of the Center for the Integration of Composites into Civil Infrastructure at Texas A&M. His role supports sustainability-focused research in infrastructure. He has also secured three university transportation centers for Texas A&M and is the lead PI from TEES on each of them.

An influential mentor, Puppala has guided the academic and professional paths of 44 doctoral and 53 master’s students, many of whom are now leaders in academia and the engineering field. His extensive scholarly record includes over 550 publications, with more than 220 journal articles and seven edited special publications.

Puppala is only one of eleven new members named Distinguished Members for 2024.
